Phil, I gotsta agree with Mark. Most of the bad thump I've had to deal with has been the result of ossified dampers - particularly the monochord which not only thump but hit their neighbors as they gradually spread. _Temporary_ results can be had by needling the felt, but the things really need to be replaced.
