I have a contractor doing some work on a shop space for me too. He
says "most" of the new fixtures have electronic ballasts which reduce
the hum effect:

Sixteen years ago I bought some really cheap fixtures for my old shop,
they still have the humming magnetic ones, so keep on the lookout.

I'm putting double-doors from my garage into a small room where I can
move stuff in/out. New lights, separate electric panel, should be
nice. Of course, my son wants the space for his clarinet repair work
too...
