[pianotech] Drilling pinblocks from the bottom

I thought you used a long brad point drill that did pierce the bottom of the
block. So my question in terms of the ability for air to circulate is
what's the difference between a small hole and a larger hole.

David,

All well and good. Except, I do not drill all the way through even with the
"#2 drill"(??? what the heck is that???)! I don't allow any air from
underneath. AND, I've found that the tops of the pins will be just fine, but
the bottom will have rust on it. I suspect, (can't prove), that the lack of
air circualtion in the cavity is somewhat the cause of this.

Also, my studies have shown that the area of the Willamette Valley, (where I
live, more or less), is an ideal mild climate that is consistant and
favorable to/for pianos. That "wet" B.S. is put out by the Native
Oregonians, (of which, I am NOT), just to keep the rest of the world from
moving here!<G>

In short, I think drilling all the way through is unnecessary in the
process.

I'm out of here,

Yeah but if the bottom is rusty so is the top probably. Anyway, I do seal
the block, I do use a pin driving fluid which puts a light coating of
varnish on the pin and inside the hole and even if you don't drill all the
way through with the #2 drill you are poking a hole in the bottom that
allows air to move in and out. If you want to avoid rust you have to move
out of that rain soaked northwest where you live!

David,

Consider, the next time you pull the pins on a rebuild, look at the ends of
the tuning pins. More often than not, they are rusty! Gee, I wonder why?
Personally, I don't want ANY moisture getting into the pin block if I can
avoid it. Hence, I do not drill all the way through. AND, I put a finish on
the pin block...completely! In 37 years of doing it this way, I have had 0,
(zero) failures, even on pianos that were subjected to extremely adverse
conditions! So, there's the reason to NOT drill all the way through. Just
another "fine point", like the Becket thingee!<G>

I haven't found a reason not to.

And your reason for doing so is what???

I realize that but I do drill them through.

David Love said: "Since the pinblock needs to be tightest at the top,
wouldn't it make sense to drill them from the bottom of the block? Double
drilling would make that

possible and then the slight bit of wandering and run out as you line up the

hole for the second pass would only impact the bottom of the hole and not

the top. Drill the first pass from the top and then flip the block over and

run the second pass from the bottom. Assumes, of course, that you don't

drill the block in the piano after it's installed."

David,

That also assumes that a person would drill the pinblock ALL the way
through.....Which I don't!<G> (with good reason, IMA)
