Not drilling through is unnecessary to the process. The photo below makes me wonder if what rusts pins isn't built right into the block. This is a Steinway, and there is a rust line at every block lamination joint, not just the bottom one where the hole was open. I wonder how much worst it might have been without some air circulation down there at the bottom of the hole. The point is, of course, that there isn't a clear body of evidence either way, as to which is "better". Drill through, or don't drill through, as you wish. When the magic day arrives and realistic evidence indicates which is better, we can all start doing it *that* way, if we aren't already.
