[pianotech] Epoxy for pinblock

Hey Guys,

As a rule of thumb, all epoxies are derived from a few simple things. A resin which is likely purchased from DOW chemicals no matter who puts their name on it, and a reactive agent. Thinner epoxies such as West system are thinner because they add a chemical called a "reactive diluant".... which is a thin liquid which "kicks" or reacts along side of the reactant as opposed to disolving such as acetone. If you are to do a pinblock, you have to consider 2 simple things. Hardness and saturation. A 5-1 ratio should translate to a hard epoxy used for laminates, and coatings. IE, finishing. If that sounds like what you have, than that is good. The hard epoxy will saturate the maple as long as the open time is ample.... 30min or more..... and because it is hard it will aid the existing wood in hardness while filling open pores. Even so, let that pinblock sit for a week before you pin it. Otherwise, the soft epoxy will run fluid on you when you turn the pins and the pins will be glued in. The only reason I know this is because whenever we build pinblocks for victorians, we put a solid maple stretcher along the bottom of the laminate block.... using epoxy. Pins will get caught up in it if you are hasty. Good luck, and be sure to oversize those pins either way.

God bless,

Mark Perry
