I spent the first half of my life near-sighted till I got far-sighted in middle age. If I were still nearsighted and had the choice, I'd attempt to keep some of it, because close work is so much easier without wearing glasses at all, and I do so much close work. I must admit that looking at distant landscapes and seeing crisp edges and beautiful colors after half a lifetime of squinting and blur is a good consolation prize for needing multiple reading glasses.
