[pianotech] Drilling pinblocks from the bottom

Yeah but if the bottom is rusty so is the top probably.  Anyway, I do seal
the block, I do use a pin driving fluid which puts a light coating of
varnish on the pin and inside the hole and even if you don't drill all the
way through with the #2 drill you are poking a hole in the bottom that
allows air to move in and out.  If you want to avoid rust you have to move
out of that rain soaked northwest where you live!

Consider, the next time you pull the pins on a rebuild, look at the ends of
the tuning pins. More often than not, they are rusty! Gee, I wonder why?
Personally, I don't want ANY moisture getting into the pin block if I can
avoid it. Hence, I do not drill all the way through. AND, I put a finish on
the pin block...completely! In 37 years of doing it this way, I have had 0,
(zero) failures, even on pianos that were subjected to extremely adverse
conditions! So, there's the reason to NOT drill all the way through. Just
another "fine point", like the Becket thingee!<G>

That also assumes that a person would drill the pinblock ALL the way
through.....Which I don't!<G> (with good reason, IMA)
