Why make things complicated?

Plug in the camera via USB. it will appear as a device in the file manager.
Simply move the file from the camera to your desired folder.

You will need to disassociate the event of plugging the camera in with
automatically importing the files into a viewer. In Mac, I had to disable
that auto feature for iPhoto in Preferences.

It is easier to drag your file to whatever folder in whatever 
directory you choose.

Then you can open the file in a viewer, crop and size to your liking 
and <save as>.
