John,
Although, it would seem that it is not physically possible for the pianis to change the tone by simply playing a certain way, I think that there is something to what the teacher alludes to. The classic example is Horowitz's ability to make his Steinway sound so nice, even tho when played by others it sounded like crap.
As to HOW it's done, I have no clue!<G>
