Regarding the efficacy or fidelity of older recordings: if you listen closely and with focus, you can discern the tone and quality of the piano despite the aural challenges. You must develop your ear, and your body as a feedback loop, and not just necessarily your intellect and logic. Your heart and gut are wise in their own way.
