Well stated.  The mercury (and the cleaning solvents used) also
contributed to the adage "mad as a hatter".

I remember seeing a special on TV where they described hat making years
ago.  
I heard what the used to harden the felt it was Mercury!

Naturally hat-hardeners began to die from the stuff.  Extremely toxic
when 
inhaled.  Best left in a thermometer.
