Geoff- Deal with broken strings by becoming a virtuoso string splicer, and you will be a hero. A well-done splice is an impressive demonstration of technical ability. Splicing a broken string is almost always the best repair, especially if it is a bass string. Check out the sections on string splicing in the Technical Exam Source Book.
