mic for laptop + RCT

When I have to use an external mic, I use the Radio Shack lapel mic  
(about $25).
It has a built-in battery and a very flat response. It should work  
most laptops.
The built-in battery is a pain though, dies if you don't remember to  
turn it
off.

Some laptops require a higher level input and can't use a low-level  
mic. That
is the most likely reason for your poor readings.
