There's no good reason at all not to, and I did just that for years, with 
owner approval. These days, I just ream the plate hole a bit bigger and 
don't install bushings. While I like the feel of bushings, keeping the pin 
off of the plate is the real intent for me, and a denser block (or cap) and 
a larger hole in the plate webbing does that very well.
