Hi Paul,
The easiest way to tell what's where is to measure a few speaking lengths 
at the top end. C-8 will be about 50mm, C-7 about 100mm, C-6 about 200mm. 
Once you have a C that's identified in the right octave, the rest is simple 
enough.
