Dan, I have done enough research and evaluation of scales to know that the plate castings and duplex castings on S & S grands are not exactly the same, from piano to piano. Therefore, your thinking is flawed and I will stick with that statement. Your ideas are viable and I think that it behooves us to pay more attention to the Duplex on other pianos. But, the Steinway Duplex has an extremely limited space for placement position. The best I can offer for the S & S is to replace the casting with individual duplex bars and do the calculation of their placement on an individual basis. Those who ASSUME that all of the same make/model of pianos are EXACTLY the same are doomed to failure. I know these FACTS from years of scale evaluations and rebuilding. These are the real facts, in my experience, and you are not going to convince me otherwise. The same applies to the book: "A Guide To Restringing", by Travis. It may get you "close", but it ain't the know all, be all. "Close" only counts in Horseshoes, Hand Grenades and H Bombs, IMHO! We have the tools, today, to be extremely accurate and informed. I choose to do my own evaluations with modern equipment and come to my own conclusions. After all, the Duplex System is definitely not Rocket Science! As for your book, why should I pay you money for something that is flawed and for information that I already have at my disposal?
