Liberace by far, has been the biggest name artist I've ever tuned for. =
I think it was in 1985, a year or two before his death, he came to =
Alabama and the company I worked for supplied the 9 ft Baldwin. I went =
out to tune it early in the afternoon; I had to stay through the show =
too, just in case any problems arose and to touch it up at intermission. =
After tuning it, I wandered around and opened one of the doors =
off-stage - and there was his dressing room with all of his outfits! =
I felt like I was looking at the crown jewels of London, the way =
everything glittered!
I'll never forget it though; I sat through the show right outside his =
dressing room off the wings of the stage. When it was almost time for =
him to break for a minute and do a costume change, his valet would walk =
up to the curtain, and try to time having a cigarette lit to give him as =
soon as he was offstage. I thought it odd at the time, but I could see =
him on stage, his face all lit up and energetic, but as soon as he hit =
the wings and groped for the cigarette, his shoulders would sag and he =
looked very tired.
