Journal seem to freely sell S&S decals, Do they require such "swearing"

before they sell? Their ad doesnt imply that.

Brian;
The "swear" part was kinda tongue in cheek but the "Notice to the Purchaser"
amounts to the same thing with implied threat.
I have no problem with S&S designating an "official" decal supplier and/or
their trademark protection activities. That having been said if S&S did not
require or at least 'strongly' suggest that DU include the following with
each S&S decal purchase I don't believe they would include same.
-------------
"Steinway and Sons," "Steinway" and the lyre symbol are registered trademarks
of Steinway and Sons.
The use of this decal is restricted to the original Steinway manufactured
piano or genuine Steinway replacement part(s).

By accepting and using this Steinway Style Decal the purchaser is agreeing
that he/she will affix it only to an authentic Steinway part in a Steinway
piano. If any other use was intended, the purchaser should return it to
Decals Unlimited, 9333 96th Street North, Mahtomedi, MN 55115 for a full
refund.

Any mis-use of this decal on any part or piano not manufactured or approved
by Steinway & Sons will be considered a breach of this agreement and subject
to sanctions under the prevailing federal and state trademark laws."
end quote....

Now Brian taken at face and literal value this "notice" is rather
restrictive huh?
Also it amounts to a defacto licensing of techs rebuilding S&S instruments
and such defacto action binds them, by their 'own' actions, to using only
"genuine" or "original" or "approved" parts in their rebuild...........the
same applies to the Wapin idea/technique/procedures agreement, if it has been
represented truthfully, and there is nothing wrong with either concept.

Such things may be twisted to suit any purpose, as we have seen in this
thread vis a vis "Wapin" ideas, techniques, system, application, etc.
My view, no grin.
