Roy,
I though Richard's one-liner was great. too bad you didn't get the answer 
you wanted . . .
because there is no answer; each piano is different.

Maybe a better answer is what my grandmother would say when giving a recipe
to my aunts and cousins of her renowned desserts:

"Use enough, but not too much".

"How much is enough, ma/grandma"?

"It depends on how much you are making".


So how much softener is needed? How hard_are_the hammers?

I prefer steam, a lot less drying time.
