Plate finish

I service a rebuilt grand who's plate was sprayed with enamel.
It seems quite durable, but it has a chip in the finish.
Apparently the enamel goes on quite thick, and is not likely
to scratch, but it can chip off.
Does anyone out there use enamel on plates.
Any objections to its use.
