Harpsichord

John, harpsichords are different than pianos, sort of.

The coils should be tight and neat from the beckett for about 5/16"
then descend in a spiral until the bottom coil has a paper thickness
of clearance above the wrest plant (pin block). Harpsichord tuning
pins are a little thinner (you might have noticed this) so their
tendency to flagpole is much greater.

Some older instrument's tuning pins did not have a beckett hole.
Instead they relied upon the wire being over wrapped a down pointing
beckett by about the 5/16" tightly coiled over wrap.

If you start with about 4" of wire and a tuning pin out of the block
you turn the pin and make the cil just like some do during piano
restringing the pack off enough to be able to get the pin into the
hole and tap it in with the last few coils descending down the pin.

I always had trouble doing these coils because the wire is so thin and
because I prefer to use a crank.
