Brian, I would get them to mic the piano if it is not already. Amplification probably will help. Also, give the pianist a monitor speaker--sometimes they can't hear themselves play if there are drums and other instruments. There is no reason why it has to be played that hard. I had a situation similar to yours with a Pentecostal church. They changed pianists and got a mic for the piano. No more broken strings. I think the problem is theirs, and not the piano's. No piano should have the "living daylights" pounded out of it. Hope this helps.
