Actually, we could use a few more "tree huggers."  Even though indiscriminate
logging has been curtailed to some extent, we are a long way from sustainable
yield forestry.  Considering the length of time it takes to grow a Sitka spruce
tree that can be used for musical instruments, it's way too late.  Besides, most
Sitka spruce goes into regular lumber, pulp, boxes, crates, etc.  It is also used
for mill-work such as doors, sashes, trim molding, etc.  Aircraft, boats (spars &
masts) and musical instruments come way down on the list.

Concerning the rest of your musings -- for the most part, I agree.
