Sam,

CNC is a generic term for computer-controlled machining equipment.

A friend of mine has an early, not-quite-so-easily-progammable model,
(mounted as a vertical end-mill).  The combination allows him to make just
about anything he wants to make.  Fortunately, he doesn't mind making the
occasional odd piece for his off-the-wall piano-geek friend.
