 Would it be easier to drill a hole on a block of wood of the right size that
 could be slipped over the key pin, then drive the pin down until its top is
 flush with the top of the wood block?

Gordon--Thanks for the suggestion.  I will try it.  Another person suggested
the same thing but I was afraid driving the pin with the dowel would cause
the pilot hole to get deeper.  By the time I got to end of the ro the pins
could be 1/4" higher.  Of course I would see that but then the advantage of
doing this was would be lost.  It will be worth and experiment however.
