[CAUT] Upright key weighting

This is a Baldwin Classic Console! Possibly one of the junkiest junk pianos ever made. I would not expect too much, or invest too much in it.

Adding keyweights gives the fingers lead to push on, that's all. It's a pretty "flat" conception of what the effort at the keyfront is about.

Get some small "Binder Clips" from the office supply store.
Clip them at the top of the hammer shank, just below the hammer head, and squeeze to remove the wire handles. If necessary, re-shim the hammer rest rail to accept the slight change in clearance.

This is fast, cheap and reversible. Unlike adding key weight or changing the action springs, this has a real, dynamic effect on the relationship of the hammer inertia and the effort at the keyfront. It may also change the sound of the piano. Put the clips on the mid-range, let the customer try it, and if he likes it, finish the job.

This can be done in the home, makes no mess, and since the clips are "pre-weighed," you are adding an even weight to the hammers, from A0 to the top. If you want, "taper" the top section by gradually moving the clips toward the hammer butt.

Follow this up with steam or alcohol voicing and you may have given the customer good value for the dollar. It can be done in an hour.

I've got a customer with a Baldwin Classic console who complains that the touch is too light and he can't perform well on the heavier-touch pianos elsewhere. In the center, it weighs in around 46g. Is there a method of increasing the touch weight reliably?

      Thanks in advance,
