Most online communities go through phases as you describe, Rob, where the conversation is diluted, flame wars start, and so on (Pianoworld.com is so big that it's changing rapidly). I've held on to Pianotech for many years, now, and I have to say that it's moved back around to less acrimony and more professional conversations, which participation from Dale Erwin, Del, David Andersen, and many other top techs. For some, it's easier to dip into by using the archives rather than having your inbox fill up with it. Check it out: http://ptg.org/pipermail/pianotech_ptg.org/ In any case, I'd rather have a self-managed group than a moderated one.
