Bill- I was at the first Oberlin/Steinway session a few years ago. It was definitely worthwhile for me, and there were several more-experienced technicians there, none of them complaining of their time being wasted. For me the most valuable part was when we broke into groups, each with a Steinway tech, (I was with John Patton) and got so see and hear them evaluating tone note-to-note, string-to-string, and seeing what sounds they responded to and what they did about it. (Needle here, so deep, re-sand hammer, recheck fit, listen, etc.) Also just seeing with eyes, ears and fingers what older Steinways can be with proper care, and how the Oberlin techs organize and go about their business, and what their standards are, all were beneficial to me. My 2 cents. So I went back & re-read the thread in the May archives about the whole Steinway technicians deal. Very enlightening. I've been a technician for 30 years, worked in several institutions, currently at Youngstown State Univ. in Ohio...an All-Steinway school for 4 years. I have an opportunity to attend the Oberlin/ Steinway Technician's Workshop. Judging from a couple of ya'll's comments in May I'm wondering if this is a valuable use of my time. Or I could just go to YSU & make some money instead of spending it. Any thoughts? Bill Kirkwood BTW I LOVE the little green shop apron they sent. I think the Steinway boutique lists this at $15. I got a deal!!
