David, Just catching up on some reading. There is one case where you might want to smooth these old grooves. BTW, it's easy to do with a fret file. If the old stringing job was less than stellar and the strings did not go in a straight line from tuning pin to capo, then you should dress the counterbearing bars so that when you restring, it's easier to achieve the straight string line from pin to capo.
