In my situation, I get time off, with pay, as professional development, but I don't get any expenses paid. But the neat things is I not only get time to go to seminars and the convention, but as the IC of the seminar next year, I am allowed time off for planning meetings, etc. Check in the faculty or staff handbook to see if there is something in there that allows you to do this.
