Jeff, For a similar reason, I have bent the rods with 4 90 degree bends, to lower the middle. (I hope that's easy enough to imagine. If not, say so and I'll try to be more descriptive). I think that's easier than what you are describing. Just put a rod in a vise and push with your hand. It's pretty soft metal. Of course, sometimes there isn't even enough clearance for the rods themselves between beams and ribs.
