If it's necessary, it's necessary. If not, not. Depends on what's there.

Paul and Thumpe,
Again, it depends. I've had them sink noticeably, but never drastically 
enough to consider it to be a problem. Here's a couple of photos of the 
bolt setup I use. It puts a pretty big footprint on the wood, for crush 
resistance, and sticks out the back about as far as the hinges already 
do. Looks neat and tidy too for the "Good Housekeeping" spiders living 
in luxury among the back posts. That's a 3/8" carriage bolt. The washer 
is a standard hardware store item, with a 1-3/8" OD, a 9/16" ID, and 
around 0.092" thick, depending on the batch. The hole in the washer fits 
over the square on the bolt shank under the head.

Or, Mcmaster-Carr has washers 3"OD, 9/16"ID, and 1/4" thick at 5 for 
$14.80. I bet those suckers won't either bend or sink.
