Back when I would strip mute a piano, I really liked the White Action cloth from Schaff - 317W ( Medium white cloth, 1" wide, .110 thick. ) It was also extremely resilient... aka lasted a long time. Personally, I cut mine in half, lengthwise... though as some have suggested, one could cut a taper, as well. Though sometimes above the tenor break on Grands I needed the Thin 209T red strip ( .135" thick ), which is, of course, thicker. Its for sticker/ abstract felting, wippen heels....ahhh you know that. I use the thick stuff from Schaff. I've use this material for mutes for about 30 years. I strip the material in 1/2 inch or so pieces and hot glue the ends together so I have on continuous piece. The more worn pieces I use in the high treble and the newer thicker pieces in the bass and tenor. Dale Erwin R.P.T. Erwin's Piano Restoration Inc.
