About 30 years ago I remember seeing a roughly 5' Mehlin grand with one strut at about note 50ish, and the two end struts. No strut between the bass and tenor. Tall plate and bridges. I think they made pianos with three sections and with four sections but I think they all had struts in the frame. ddf Delwin D Fandrich Piano Design & Fabrication 6939 Foothill Court SW, Olympia, Washington 98512 USA Phone 360.515.0119 - Cell 360.388.6525 del at fandrichpiano.com <mailto:del at fandrichpiano.com> - ddfandrich at gmail.com From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of Encore Pianos Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2012 1:42 PM To: pianotech at ptg.org Subject: Re: [pianotech] Keep Mehlins Weird Would that have been a "semi-barless" grand, too? Anyway , floating bass and ribs that are full thickness at the rim and taper to about 3/8" in the middle. This piano is in poor shape so a judgement on the success of these designs was clouded but it's interesting to see none the less. Chickering , Mehlin and a few others had true R and D it seems.
