Larry, I've replaced many and never used a clamp. Hot hide glue does the job. Glue up all the back/top part first, then go through the set again and do the front bottom. Apply glue, pull the leather over and hold it in place with you finger for a second or two and it will stay in place. If they are cut accurately and you line up the leather with the bottom of the back check, the tension will be good. Never had a problem with checking or tension.

If I were to go that route  ........... and aside from getting the grain of the leather in the right direction  ............    is it critical to get the leather at a consistent tightness to get some reasonable checking effect?? 
 
A procedure involving a clothes pin has been suggested.  Comments??
