Get a good strong paint remover that contains methylene chloride, followed by a wash with denatured alcohol and steel wool. When it all dries, sand the veneer to remove the residual stain.

You may need to use an alcohol based barrier coat to prevent fish before you refinish it.

Two applications and scrub with soft brass brush and tsp wash - it only took off about 30% of the finish and there is still color in the pores.
