[pianotech] Soundboard Decals

That is what I use.<G> I'm really not into the purist forms of shellac, where you make your own out of crystals and such. The canned stuff gets yucky quickly. The Spray stuff is the best imo.

Joe, i've not done this, but thought about it. Have you tried using spray shellac on the decal?

Claude asked: "Hey, Guys & Gals,

I need to apply a varnish-transfer soundboard decal, and it has been years
since I last did this. The decal is expensive, and although I

have two of them in case I screw up the first, I would like to get it right
the first time. The instructions I have

received with the decal fill me with more trepidation than confidence.

It seems that the last time I did this, there was another, more
user-friendly, way of applying the decal, even though it is designed to

be applied with varnish.

Any counsel would be appreciated.

I'm in the shop this morning; I'll check back later.

Thanks."

Claude,
I've found that the best way to apply those, is with Shellac. Shellac is
sticky and dries quicker, so less time for the darned things to
buckle/bubble/etc.<G> Once it is firmly afixed to the soundboard with the
Shellac, then follow the directions to remove the paper. After that, let it
dry for at least 24 hours, then top coat with spray varathane or such. That
is what I've had the best luck with.
Best,
Joe
