I've never had minimum insurance coverage and never plan to. Comprehensive is a good thing to have. Example: I recently paid $50 (deductible) for a $500 windshield. If leasing puts you in a lower tax bracket you may end up paying less in taxes. If you use tax software it’s pretty easy to play with the numbers to see how it works out. If you are really interested in bottom line, do not buy or lease new. Lots of good vehicles out there for $1500 to $3000. Pay cash. You get a big savings on insurance as well since minimum coverage is all you need. These are disposable vehicles. If you total one, just go buy another. Autotraders.com or cars.com are great sites to find exactly the used vehicle you are looking for at great prices. I have bought and sold on those sites and had very good experience. Craigslist.com is also a great place to find good deals. Download the Craigslist Reader Pro for free and you’ve got a nice search engine that enables you to do some pretty powerful searching. I recently got running a vintage Honda CB900, 1981. Last plated in 1991; it sat in a barn for 20 years. It’s my new service vehicle if it isn’t raining. I’m loving it, even on cooler days, and getting 35-40 mpg. I’ve got about $1500 in it total ($500 for the bike, $1k for parts and stuff) and lots of fun evenings tinkering in the garage with my adult sons and son in law. There are some amazing motorcycle deals on CraigsList. And lots of internet forums for specific model bikes to help you fix them. I’m on 2 for my bike and they both sure made my project easier. I paid taxes, registration, and all extra costs out of pocket. Waaaaaay cheaper than a lease. I also didn't buy into the whole "you can write everything off if you leased". The more you write off, the smaller your bottom line is on paper. My Hyundai Santafe has been great but it's bigger than I need and I'm at the tipping point so to speak. That is big $ repairs on the horizon. I'm thinking about a fuel efficient little wagon --Kia soul, nissan cube. Chevy whatever it it's called. Any way your collective thoughts, experiences appreciated.
