Indeed, you cannot write off that income as a bad debt, unless you've already included that income on an IRS document..  see IRS web link:  http://www.irs.gov/publications/p535/ch10.html

I'd still try one more time (phone call + USMail Invoice) to see if you can get them to send the money to you.

You can’t write off income that was never generated in the first place. A lost check is income that was never generated. You did the work but the money never made it to the bank. No income, no taxes, no write off.
