I don't know about Edisons, but in my Victrola it's mica. You can see a little bit of cracking by where the needle arm attaches to the diaphragm. 

Disclaimer for those picky folks out there (you know who you are): It won't play very well as pictured. I had to swing it to that position to get the picture.
