[pianotech] Yer Wheels

My homeboy Mr. Bill is a member of my New Hampshire Chapter, and I live
North of him. I can't remember the last time I bought snow tires
(seriously). Just good all season radials and front wheel drive for my
small vehicles. And I teach skiing at Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch in
the winter. REAL MEN DON'T NEED SNOW TIRES.

I am presently driving a 2011 Scion Xd. It's just big enough in the back
for the grand action and the tools. I love the way the 60-40 rear seats
fold down dead flat in seconds Pull on one handle on the top of the seat to
slide it forward all the way, then pull on the one next to it to fold the
seat flat. Then flip over the slender "toilet seat lid" to cover the gap
between the back of the seat and the rest of the floor. Absolutely the
nicest set up I have seen. It is just big enough back there for what I want
to carry.

I loathe the gas gauge however. Eight amber ovals on the way from full to
empty. When you get to the last oval, it starts flashing. But unless you
are watching the gauge and know when you dropped into the last oval, you
have not a clue whether you have an eighth of a tank or you are sucking
fumes. I live in a state that is still largely rural, so the next gas
station may be 10 or 15 miles away. Makes me want to find the bean counter
who made the engineers design such a thing so that they could save a nickel
on the cost of the gauge, and threaten him with bodily harm.

Jon, what about the Prius makes its carbon footprint so large? I find the
Hummer comment surprising, since it is a mid life crisis poster boy villain
as conspicuous carbon consumer.

I'm with you Jon! With a family of 5 who depends on me safety, reliability,
and ability to go in all conditions is top of my list. You can buy an awful
lot of gas for one or two days of tunings missed do to adverse weather. Also
think about the cost of medical bills vs. gas if you get into a serious
accident! A neck or back injury could cost many year's worth of gas!I also
need to occasional pull a piano trailer. Last but not least, I want to look
good pulling up to my client's houses.

I went with an Acura MDX. Consumer reports top rated mid-size luxury SUV
(along with the Lexus - but the Lexus didn't have as much room for my
stuff).

Ever since I purchased a Ford Escape with 17" wheels, I never
thought again about the perceived savings on a few miles per gallon

Gimme a big ole American car over any fern veHickle.

BTW, did you know that the carbon footprint to produce
a Prius is larger than one to produce a Hummer??

What ever happened to Station Wagons? I think I had one of the last ones...
