[pianotech] strings

Roger,
I too have tuned the old uprights where I worried about string breakage and with success. I did not know about the thought of not turning the pin down and just tuning up. I will ponder it and perhaps give it a try. Thanks.
However, I was responding to Marshall's post about the boy and his piano lessons and how long they would last. Even if the piano gets tuned it may be a poor instrument to begin a new student on. Bad habits are created when a student has to compensate for a poor action response. I stand by what I said. Help the parents find a way to get the kid a decent instrument. Who knows what he might be able to accomplish?
Just my thoughts and I love the learning here.

I almost feel that rust acts like little ball bearings, and actually lessens the chance of string breakage.Because, I have also noticed string breakage, where no rust is present, and little breakage where it was present.John Ross,Windsor, Nova Scotia.

I have encountered old uprights stored on a porch outside for years that were nothing but a ball of rust and 100 cents flat. I was sure I would break every string. Yanked it up 130 cents, do a second tune and not one string broken. The next piano, a 3 year old Kimball in good shape, snapped one as soon as the pin was nudged. There is little rhyme or reason to string breakage and almost no predictability. Mike Kurta, RPT N. Michigan chapter Keytop Specialist
