  Letoff should surely be the same after hammer filing as before.

Hammer filing generally should not remove all trace of grooves. The 
bottom of the grooves (the part of the hammer, essentially, that sets 
the string in motion) will therefore still be the same distance from the 
strings at letoff following filing.

That's not to say that the distance is correct, or the same as when the 
hammers were new. But filing of itself shouldn't change it.
