I found these scrapers to be sturdy  and able to sharpen good for a reasonable sidewall cut.

  Actually, I reshaped the chisel on (of course) the Tormek which has a very handy adaptor for curved blades. I thinned the blade by almost half since my initial experience was the same as yours, Gene.
