[pianotech] Tuning in climate changes

Hi David,

Yes, I typically call to confirm the day before or the morning of.

Of course I would want to know, and occassionally I make some calls to make sure at the least my rates are in line.  But I wouldn't do it via a third party.  Would seem rather erroneous, IMHO.

These are clients that I am most happiest without!

Matthew -
Just to clarify, the impression given, perhaps erroneous, was there was a pre-existing relationship between you and the client:

I just had a cancellation this morning from a client
As such, one would not expect her to be checking around, especially on the morning of the appointed day.  I guess it might be reasonable to inquire of you whether it is your normal procedure to confirm each appointment on the day-of.  If, for example, you had simply arrived at the appointment, would she have tried, and would you have (graciously) accepted the news that she had changed her mind?

As far as asking the rate of the other technician, I admit, that was a moment of sarcastic indulgence, relating to your conjecture that she was shopping around.  And besides: caring less aside, if everyone else in your area were charging and getting $50  more for the same service you provide, wouldn't you want to know that?  Even a little?

David,

When I need my car serviced, I wouldn't take it to the first mechanic I called.  I would call several and make my informed decision, not strickly going to the cheapest.  I assume, though, the reason most people call other technicians is to get the cheapest rate.

The weather here has turned cooler (40's) from being warmer last week.  We have been having shifting spells of cool to warm weather of late.

She's had her appointment for a few weeks now.  She cancelled when I called her this morning to confirm her appointment.  My question was whether she was going to call on her own to cancel, because it sure didn't sound like it over phone!
She just got the piano, and there is no climate control system installed (t's an old upright).

As for asking her how much the other technician is charging, that is, frankly, none of my business, and I could care less.
