Ahh - I thought you meant taper the inner strands for only the first inch.
You mean pull the sheath back for more than that and taper it? How many
inches would you pull back the sheath before it's impracticable?
I think the judicious filing method seems easiest,

Actually i just pulled the sheath back, to try it, a few inches, but now it
won;t return to it's original position. My guess is I've pulled the inner
strands through from the other end. :)
