Michael, If the dampers are out, I always align the hammer and rough fit them to the strings before I install the dampers. Makes it a lot easier to see and line up.

I don't see anything about traveling and burning the hammers in your procedure. There are other changes I would make, but I just took a lunch break and I'm right in the middle of regulating an action. I'll look it over later tonight.

Subject: [pianotech] Regulation sequence advice sought

I'm studying for my RPT Technical exam and could use some help understanding and developing a grand regulation sequence. I'm working with a grand action model and using Bill Spurlock's recommended sequence from the PTG Technical exam source book. I have read that regulation is a circular exercise, which will get closer and closer with each pass. I don't believe that all steps need to be repeated, so I'm looking for an effective, essential sequence to repeat after the first pass regulation listed below. Your comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

  First pass:
Install damper and adjust for free wire travel through damper guide rail and into damper block
Install key and set key height to provided specification (set quickly and not exactly)
  Assemble and install stack
  Align hammer to string target
Align wippen to knuckle, capstan and let off button
  Square backcheck to hammer tail
Set repetition lever height (visually set jack top to slightly below top of repetition lever)
Set hammer shank to just above rebound (rest) cushion
Align back edge of jack to back edge of knuckle core
  Set 1/8” let off
Set 1/16” drop (3/16” from string)
Set key height to provided specification
  Set dip to provided specification
  Align backcheck to ½” – ¾” checking
Adjust repetition lever spring strength for smooth, positive hammer rise out of check
Adjust blow distance to provide adequate aftertouch
  Set checking to 5/8”
Set damper lift to begin at 1/2 blow distance
Set damper stop rail (felt) to just above damper lever with key depressed
