Of all the exclusive buildings I went into, hers was the only one where I had to enter through the service entrance. I was hoisted up to her apartment in a small hand operated elevator. There was a heavy rope that went through the floor and top of the elevator. The operator would hoist us up and down pulling on the rope. Quit an experience. Lauren turns 86 next month, lives in Manhattan, and apparently is still sharp as a whip. I used to tune Lauren Bacall's Mason and it took me 30 minutes to remove and put back all the photos on the piano. The entire lid, edge to edge was filled. Also, there were so many photos and things on all the surrounding tables that I had to use the floor. The good thing about the floor was that I was able to arrange the photos as they were on the piano. But I did enjoy seeing all the signed photos. Actors, politicians and other dignitaries. So many wonderful art pieces in her home also. David, you just brought back some old memories. The family eventually decided to keep the Baldwin grand, but they were all very proud of this sign their mother kept on the piano. It gave me a good laugh.
