[pianotech] Mysterious Key Noise

 I'm not sure how you're lifting the damper to test it...do you mean with the key, or by hand?  I'm assuming with the key.  

Have you looked at the back check to see if it might be hitting something like a sostenuto rail bracket.  I've seen that more than once.

I agree.   We are talking one key, if you absolutely can't see what is going on 
back there, remove a few parts and reinstall the action.   It seems to me, the 
key should show some marks where it is hitting something.
