I know David and you're right. We live in an area where we all know one another, who goes where, who's good and who's not. There is one particular "tooner" that is known for switching churches just for this reason alone. I sent the church a brochure on why they should hire an RPT. Maybe that'll help. -----Original Message----- From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of Porritt, David Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 9:27 AM To: pianotech at ptg.org Subject: Re: [pianotech] Standard Tuning Prices Jer: That's bad when that happens - especially if they really are tooners. However, many tuners also attend church and if they are committed to the church may volunteer to do work at a bargain or even free just as some professional singers will sing in the choir. The only way to tell the cheap tooners from the altruistic tuners is to find out who they are. dp David M. Just yesterday, I lost a long time account because "someone in the congregation claims to tune pianos and is willing to do it for much less." We will always have these kinds of situations in one manner or another. You know, I can't count the amount of times some jackass tooner changes churches for the sake of getting the account long enough to screw it up then changes churches again to get the next account because they finally lost it back to me again. They must really be hard up for work. Instead of compromising my prices and quality for the sake of a few $$$, I told the music director about these types of people, how they operate and the expense they will likely incur with the piano when then finally call me back again in a few years after they realize that person isn't dependable like I am and that they can't fix anything let alone tune pianos. Lowering your price will only bring in lower quality pianos and as mentioned, you will have to work harder to make the same amount. My dad always told me to "work smarter, not harder."
